Aches and Pains

My posture has never been fabulous. I’ve always subtly rounded off my shoulders, which I guess if anyone has the slightest knowledge in psychology would say it probably has something to do with hiding, not projecting myself forward to others. (Good chance that’s right. Despite being an extrovert, I usually have to feel very comfortable with those around me before I really relax and let my ‘self’ off the leash.)

But since March, given I’ve been working from my dining table—with a few cushions on the chair for extra padding and height—aches and pains in my back, shoulders and neck have increased. Moving my neck from left to right jams before my chin reaches level with the front of my shoulder. A stiff rotator cuff refers an ache all down my right arm. My middle back has a nasty sharp twinge, the result of slouching while seated, typing.

Sorry! This isn’t intended to be a platform to whine. And don’t worry (in case anyone might be), because I’ve got it covered. Over the last two weeks, I’ve been attending a twice-weekly online stretch and mobility class, led by a qualified myotherapist, who I’ve also seen in the real world, too. And I’ll continue with these online classes until we’re released from lockdown; if my maths is correct, that’s only about two weeks now. Bring.It.On.

  1. It’s definitely worth it to take care. When I was a teen I curled up to read — which i did a lot of — and watch tv, movies etc. I never realized that my bones would someday grow into my preferred posture. Shoulders curl forward, spine gets curved — and then come the headaches!

  2. It’s just a thought but you can get things which allow you to talk to your computer, so you don’t need to be sitting at it. They take some getting used to, I prefer to type, but just a thought. Dragon is one such example but Windows has some stuff built in.

  3. I have been doing a lot of (i.e., too much) sitting around since this lockdown started and it’s played havoc with my back. I’m now on a regimen of ibuprofen and ice packs. I guess I should be gmdoing more stretching, too.

  4. I am astounded by the number of comments!!! You write a wonderful tale and just a couple of people comment. Let the world know that you are falling apart bit by bit then everyone tells of a tale of their woes lol
    By the way I have trouble straightening my right leg after sitting for a while…………….
